2020 Subaru Outback vs. Jeep Grand Cherokee

  • We will start where most car shoppers do: the price. The 2020 Subaru Outback, which comes standard with all-wheel drive, starts below $27,000 while the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which doesn't have all-wheel drive standard, starts above $32,000. If you want an all-wheel drive Jeep Grand Cherokee, you'll pay at least $34,345.
  • The price isn't all that shows the added value of buying a 2020 Subaru Outback. This new Subaru SUV comes standard with many features that you won't find standard on the new Jeep Grand Cherokee. These standard features include Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Technologies such as forward collision warning, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. None of those driver-assist safety features come standard on the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

  • Also standard in the Subaru Outback? Systems such as Hill Descent Control and Active Torque Vectoring that make it easier to handle over any terrain. These aren't standard features of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, a model claiming to be ready for any situation.
  • Both these SUVs fit five passengers, but the Subaru Outback does a better job of ensuring comfort and space for your camping gear. The new Outback has more legroom in each row while also having over 7 cubic feet more of max cargo space. Plus, the Subaru Outback has roof rails standard while the Jeep Grand Cherokee does not.

2020 Subaru Outback vs. Jeep Wrangler

  • Another expensive Jeep SUV that the Subaru Outback is a better value than is the Jeep Wrangler. The Subaru Outback has a starting price more than $5,000 less than the four-door Jeep Wrangler, but at least the Wrangler comes standard with four-wheel drive. The Subaru Outback is also more affordable long term as it gets over 10 more miles per gallon combined than the Jeep Wrangler.
  • When comparing standard features, the Subaru Outback and Jeep Wrangler aren't even close. The Subaru Outback comes standard with an infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a driver-assist safety package with many helpful systems, and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. The most advanced standard technology in the new Jeep Wrangler is its rear-view backup camera.

  • These models also aren't close regarding the top-of-the-line features. The Subaru Outback offers heated seats for both rows, ventilated front seats, an 11.6-inch touchscreen display, and a hands-free power rear gate. The Jeep Wrangler has heated front seats but nothing else comparable to the Subaru Outback.
  • The Jeep Wrangler is thought of as a highly capable vehicle, but the 2020 Subaru Outback can actually tow just as much. And, the Subaru Outback provides more passenger volume, with much more legroom, and a greater max cargo capacity in the cabin. In every sense, the Subaru Outback is a more practical SUV than the Jeep Wrangler.

2020 Subaru Outback vs. Nissan Murano

  • Moving away from Jeep SUVs, the Subaru Outback also compares favorably to the Nissan Murano, which claims to be a luxury SUV but still can't keep up with the Outback. The 2020 Subaru Outback is nearly $5,000 less than the base Nissan Murano, which if you want to add all-wheel drive to, you'll pay an extra $1,600.
  • The Nissan Murano has sleek looks, but it doesn't make the most of its space. The Nissan Murano is longer, wider, and taller than the Subaru Outback, but the Subaru Outback has more legroom in each row, a larger cargo area, and a greater max cargo capacity than the Nissan Murano.

  • Drivers will also enjoy more helpful features standard in the 2020 Subaru Outback. These include a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, for connecting your laptop while on the go, and a hands-free power rear liftgate, for getting to the cargo area when your hands are full. The Nissan Murano has neither of these features standard.
  • The Nissan Murano has a V6 engine standard, but it can't outperform the available four-cylinder in the Subaru Outback, which has more torque, 277 pound-feet, than the Nissan Murano, 240 pound-feet. This engine lets the Subaru Outback tow up to 3,500 pounds while the Nissan Murano tops out at 1,500 pounds.
