Doing a little research to see what the competition has to offer is the best way for Bethlehem drivers to find the SUV that has everything they are looking for. Here at Faulkner Subaru, we know that reading about trims and features isn't nearly as fun as getting behind the wheel and putting it in gear. To help our customers find the information they are looking for and get to the best part of shopping for a new car we have compared the Mazda CX-5 to the Subaru Outback in all the ways that matter most.

Powertrain & Performance:

Powerful and efficient performance are perfectly blending on the Subaru Outback with its two BOXER engine options. The Mazda CX-5 also has two engine options that aren't quite as fuel efficient or powerful.

    Subaru Outback:
  • 2.5L four-cylinder BOXER, 182 horsepower, 33 highway mpg.
  • 2.4L turbo BOXER, 260 horsepower, 30 highway mpg.
      • Mazda CX-5:
      • SKYACTIV® 2.5L four-cylinder, 187 horsepower, 30 highway mpg. when equipped with all-wheel-drive
      • SKYACTIV® 2.5T Dynamic Pressure Turbo, 250 horsepower, 27 highway mpg. - only available with all-wheel-drive

Bethlehem drivers are drawn to the Subaru Outback for its safe and reliable performance that all starts with Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system that is standard on every model. The Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive evenly supplies power to all four wheels and will shift power from wheels with less traction to those with more to maintain unmatched traction and control regardless of terrain or conditions. The Outback also comes standard with X-Mode, Hill Descent Control, Active Torque Vectoring, Vehicle Dynamics Control, and Traction Control System. The Mazda CX-5 is only available with all-wheel-drive on all models with the 187 horsepower four-cylinder engine for an additional cost.

      Advanced Safety Features:

Both the Subaru Outback and Mazda CX-5 comes standard with a number of advanced safety features. However, the Subaru Outback has a proven track record for being the safest vehicle in its class as well as offers more advanced safety features than the Mazda CX-5. Standard safety features of the CX-5 include Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Smart City Brake which only operates when traveling under 10 mph. Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Technology that includes Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering, Lane Keep Assist and Sway Warning, Pre-Collision Braking, and Pre-Collision Throttle Management standard on every Outback. Other advanced safety features that make the Subaru Outback more attractive than the Mazda CX-5 are Reverse Automatic Braking, Subaru STARLINK Safety & Security with Stolen Vehicle Recovery and Automatic Collision Notification, and Subaru DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System.

      Interior Space & Utility:

No matter where the road may take you, the Subaru Outback is ready for life's biggest adventures with more versatility and a more spacious passenger cabin. The Mazda CX-5 offers significantly less interior volume with less comfortable seating for your passengers as well as almost 20 less cubic feet of maximum cargo space. The Mazda CX-5 also falls short of the Outback when it comes to utility. The Subaru Outback is capable of towing up to 3,500 lbs. with the 2.4L turbo BOXER and 2,700 lbs. with the standard 2.5L four-cylinder. Bethlehem drivers will only be able to tow up to 2,000 lbs. with the Mazda CX-5. Another feature that will cost you extra on the CX-5 is roof rails and crossbars. While the Subaru Outback comes standard with raised roof rails that feature integrated crossbars and tie down straps. The crossbars easily fold out of the roof rails and lock into place when you need to mount a cargo box or roof rack and fold away when not in use.

        Subaru Outback:
      • Headroom Front/Rear: 40.8 / 38.9 inches
      • Legroom Front/Rear:
      • Total Passenger Space: 109 cubic feet
      • Seating Capacity: 5
      • Cargo Space: 32.5 cubic feet
      • Maximum Cargo Space: 75.7 inches
        Mazda CX-5:
      • Headroom Front/Rear: 39.7 / 39.0 inches
      • Legroom Front/Rear: 41.0 / 39.6 inches
      • Total Passenger Space: 103.6 cubic feet
      • Seating Capacity: 5
      • Cargo Space: 30.9 cubic feet
      • Maximum Cargo Space: 59.6 cubic feet

Often the biggest deciding factor for Bethlehem drivers is price and value. While the Mazda CX-5 has a slightly lower starting price than the Outback, you will need to spend a good deal more to get the same features that come standard on every Outback model. Subaru is also legendary for their amazingly long-lasting quality and performance and ability to maintain value better than any other brand. Which is why 98% of all Outbacks sold in the last 10 years are still on the road today.
